Medical Laboratory Technology Fall 2013
New Criteria
The Medical Laboratory Technology program has a limited number of seats. Therefore, a selective admissions process is administered based on cumulative GPA, laboratory science and Algebra I (MAT 013) grades.
Criteria*:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Science grades of “C” or better in both laboratory biology and chemistry.
- A grade of “C” or better in Algebra I (MAT 013)
Special Notes:
- Any student that does not have a high school cumulative GPA or who possesses a GED must have a college cumulative GPA with 12 college credits to be considered for the program.

- SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
Complete your application online with a $25 application fee between June 30, 2012 and January 30, 2013 at www.middlesexcc.edu. Please choose Medical Laboratory Technology (MED.AAS) on the application.
- REQUEST TRANSCRIPTS
Request that all high school and college transcripts be sent directly from your schools to the Admissions Office. Transcripts must be received by January 30, 2013. You will not be eligible for the program if transcripts are received after January 30, 2013. Order your transcripts early from your high school and all colleges you have attended.
- TAKE THE ESL EXAM
Take the English as a Second Language (ESL) exam if English is not your best language and if you have not completed four years of high school English courses in the US. Applicants who attended college outside the US need to have their transcripts evaluated by an accredited third party evaluator such as AACRAO or WES. If you have the evaluated equivalent of a US Bachelor’s degree you may submit TOEFL scores for review. Any required ESL courses must be completed by time of application. The College Placement Test must be taken after completion of ESL courses.
- TAKE THE COLLEGE PLACEMENT TEST
Take the College Placement Test or receive an exemption. If you have taken the test at another New Jersey College, please have the scores sent to the Middlesex County College Testing Center. If you have SAT scores that are less than five years old, please submit them to the Admissions Office for possible exemption(s). All applicants with a college degree from a US institution are exempt from the test. Applicants who attended college outside the US need to have their transcripts evaluated by an accredited third party evaluator such as AACRAO or WES. If you have the evaluated equivalent of a US Bachelor’s degree you will be exempted from the College Placement Test.
- COMPLETION OF ALL DEVELOPMENTAL COURSES* by close of wintersession 2013.
- COMPLETE PREREQUISITE COURSES*
Complete prerequisite courses of laboratory biology and laboratory chemistry with a grade of “C” or better by close of wintersession 2013.

Please read this information. This will help you identify any limitations that might prevent your successfully performing as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Additional Details
Criteria for Admissions
- Cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- College GPA: Must have 12 college credits (transcripts from the last five years or less will be used for admission criteria, BUT if you do not have 12 college credits within the last five years a cumulative GPA will be used from all colleges attended)
- High school GPA: Will use the un-weighted GPA
*If a student has 12 or more college credits the college GPA will be used. If a student has less than 12 college credits the high school GPA will be used.
- Science grades of “C” or better in laboratory biology and chemistry
- The highest laboratory biology and chemistry grade would be used from high school or college, whichever grades are higher
- A grade of “C” of better in Algebra I (MAT 013) or receive an exemption based on the College Placement Test
Special Note: Science courses taken on the college level will be weighted higher than science courses taken at the high school level.
Wintersession
The courses offered during Wintersession are limited. Please note that science courses with a laboratory are not offered during Middlesex County College 12-day Wintersession (December 26, 2012- January 14, 2013).
Developmental Courses
All courses must be completed by the close of Wintersession 2013 OR you must receive an exemption.
Prerequisite Courses
BIO 010 and CHM 010 must be completed OR a higher level 4 credit laboratory biology and/or chemistry must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Algebra I or MAT 013 must also be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
Required upon Acceptance to the program
Enrollment Deposit
- All students will be required to submit a $545 non-refundable deposit by May 10, 2013(fee subject to change annually).
Orientation is Mandatory
- All students will be required to attend a mandatory orientation
- Tentative Date – Wednesday June 5, 2013
*Any student that does not attend the required orientation will be in jeopardy of losing their seat in the program.*
Information Sheet:
The following Practical Considerations are listed so the student may be better able to assess their career choice in terms of ability to succeed in the program and gain employment in the field:
- Have written and oral communication skills in the English language to effectively and accurately communicate with patients, peers and supervisors.
- Have sufficient visual acuity to determine a specimen’s macroscopic characteristics and color. Have sufficient visual acuity to determine microscopic cell characteristics and staining proprieties.
- Have motor skills capable of fine and delicate manipulations and adjustments.
- Demonstrate acceptable affective behaviors required by health care employers such as maintaining excellent attendance and integrity and being able to work under pressure.
- Comprehend and follow clinical policies and procedures related to the profession you choose.
Health Considerations:
Due to the nature of clinical experiences in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program, students will be participating in a work environment that has the potential of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases. All student accepted into the Medical Laboratory Technology Program are provided with instruction on infection control protocols specific to the Program in order to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Legal Considerations:
A student is required to have a criminal background check performed with satisfactory results acceptable by Middlesex County College and the Medical Laboratory Technology Department and/or participating clinical facilities as a condition of admission, initial enrollment and/or continued enrollment. An offer of admission will not be final and enrollment not permitted until the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check. Admission may be denied or rescinded or enrollment terminated based on the results of the criminal background check.
