Celebration Day: Four Honored for Service

Four College employees were recently honored for service to the College. The awards were presented at Celebration Day in May, an annual event at MCC that recognizes employees for service anniversaries, the Alumnus of the Year, as well as the Outstanding Service to the College recipients.
Mathew Spano was named Alumnus of the Year for service to Middlesex County College, and Veronica Geruldsen, Evan Swan and Mary Tutalo all received Outstanding Service to the College awards.
Dr. Spano, a professor of English at the College, is a 1988 graduate. He is an editor of the College literary journal, and he is also an advisor to MCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.
Veronica Clinton, director of development and alumni relations at Middlesex, presented the award.
“Mat cares deeply about his students, works hard to make sure they succeed, and is an expert in his field, particularly haiku poetry,” she said. “He is also the founding co-director of the honors program. He teaches honors classes, helps develop courses, and recruits students.”
Evan Swan was presented the Outstanding Service to the College award for Adjunct Faculty. Professor Swan of the English Department has been a very dedicated adjunct faculty member. He has worked with the English Department’s Summer Bridge program, designed to assist developmental students attain their goals to take credit-level courses. He also advises a student club, the MCC Entrepreneurial Society, where students exchange ideas, network and build relationships around creative business ventures.
Ms. Geruldsen was presented the Outstanding Service to the College award for Staff. A copying and finishing specialist in the Department of Printing and Communications Support, Ms. Geruldsen was cited for her dedication in print operations, including copying, press operations, collating, binding and mailing. She has continually worked to improve operations and deliver top-quality customer service during her eight years at MCC.
Ms. Tutalo was presented the Outstanding Service to the College award for Administrators. The assistant director of the MCC Retail Services Corporation and buyer for the College Bookstore, Ms. Tutalo has earned the appreciation of faculty, staff, students and alumni in her daily work. She also volunteers for many campus projects and events that directly affect students. She coordinates author readings and signings, student club events and department activities. She has collaborated with the Edison Mom’s Book Club, the Mommy & Me story reading to kids program, the Boy Scouts, and a Metuchen-based yoga-meditation group. This past year she has served as the president of the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic College Stores, a regional professional organization.
