Profs Present at Conference

Professors Shirley Wachtel and Helena Swanicke of the English Department conducted a workshop, "Using Popular Culture to Engage the College Reader" at the 2010 Conference of the Two-Year College Association (TYCA)-Northeast, held in Washington in December.

In this interactive workshop, they demonstrated how their new textbook, "Spotlight on Reading," uses celebrity biographies to motivate students in developmental classes to become successful readers. The instructors explained the methods used in their own classes in which students' scores on reading exams increased 32 percent by the fifth week of class. The 45th Annual Conference of TYCA-Northeast provided a forum for a vibrant exchange of ideas from college instructors and administrators. Bestselling author and actor Malachy McCourt was a featured speaker.
