Free Tax Prep Assistance Available in New Brunswick
A coalition of educational and nonprofit organizations will be offering free tax preparation services to the community this coming tax season. The program, called VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), was announced at a kickoff celebration December 10 at the College's New Brunswick Center. It will start in February.
"This service is aimed at low and moderate income residents," said Evelyn Rosa, director of the New Brunswick Center. We want to spare them the expense of having a tax preparation service handle their taxes, but at the same time, we want them to be able to take advantage of all the tax credits to which they are entitled. We don't want them to miss out on any refunds."
Last year, VITA was able to help residents receive a total of $617,000 in refunds.
The agencies in Middlesex County that will be sponsoring VITA sites are Middlesex County College, Rutgers University (Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honor Society), Elijah's Promise Soup Kitchen, United Way of Central Jersey, Magyar Bank, the Jewish Renaissance Center of Perth Amboy and the Puerto Rican Action Board. Days and hours vary by location. To locate the nearest VITA site, call 1-800-906-9887.
