Assessment at Middlesex

By Christine Harrington
Associate Professor, Psychology

As our vision statement affirms, "Middlesex County College puts learning first and measures its success only by the success of its students. All members of the College community contribute to student success." In keeping with this vision and best practices across the nation, faculty, staff and administrators from all areas of the College have been actively engaged in ongoing assessment practices.

Although often shrouded in mystery, assessment is simply the process of collecting data and information that can then be used to guide us as we strive to improve student learning and services. This is clearly not a new process; assessment has always been, and will continue to be, central to our work since we recognize an obligation to our students, our taxpayers, and our institution to base our policies and initiatives on data-supported reasoning.

However, recently we have been working toward more integrated, systematic, and publicized assessment practices. As a result of these and other efforts, stimulating and productive conversations have taken place throughout the College about clearly defining our academic expectations of our students and how we can best assist them to meet their goals. This spring, faculty, administrators, and service providers will have opportunities to showcase their accomplishments, and to continue to learn from one another. Clearly everyone at MCC has been creatively and effectively using assessment to improve what we do and how we do it.
