Student Newspaper Wins Awards in Collegiate Contest

Five members of Quo Vadis, the College student newspaper, recently won awards at the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association. The contest honors student newspapers from two-and four-year colleges and universities in the state.

“We have been in the process of building a new type of staff for the last couple of semesters,” said Melissa Edwards, the advisor. “We are working toward having a community college staff that is ready to move on to a four-year program and be competitive. This is challenging in the new media environment, but we are making progress. We are very proud of all of the winners in the contest.”

Cartoonist Fernando Locatera won two first place awards for “Transfer Fair,” and “Childcare.”

Kim Silva, managing editor, was awarded second place in the category of biography/personality profile for her piece on Professor Jeremy Nickerson.

Monica Dufour, the opinion editor, won second place for her column, “Contemplating the Fear of Death.”

Staff writer Victoria Levi took second place for her column, “LGBT Community Needs Awareness.”

Photographer Rob Rivera won first place for “Breast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale” and third place for a sports photo he took, “MCC Falls to Brookdale CC 61-52.”
