Middlesex County College Foundation 40th Annual Scholarship Ball Celebration
May 11, 2009
“Hats Off to a Class Act” was the theme of this year’s special 40th anniversary of the Middlesex County College Foundation Annual Scholarship Ball. This theme represented a tribute -- “Hats off” to our students and donors, who are truly “class acts!” The Scholarship Ball was held on Saturday, April 18 at the Pines Manor in Edison with 189 guests attending. Despite the current economy, and thanks to the generosity of loyal individuals, corporations, and businesses throughout the area, the event surpassed its goal and raised $151,702 to advance the Foundation’s mission to provide resources to help deserving MCC students realize their academic and career goals.
The festivities of the evening opened with a cocktail hour with scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and featured an array Silent Auction gifts and 50/50 raffle. The spirited night was filled with a delicious dinner, special recognitions, and a lively performance by the Middlesex County College Dance Club to the swing sound from the 1940’s. Sirius Orchestra played continuous music for an enjoyable and fun evening. It will be quite the gala!
During the dinner program, the Foundation recognized Investors Saving Bank as its Corporate Honoree. Investors Savings Bank, a generous supporter of the Foundation, currently has three vice presidents that serve on our MCC Foundation Board of Directors. Investor’s Chief Operating Officer, Domenick Cama, thanked the Foundation for this recognition of its continued commitment to the community and to the success of Middlesex County College students.
The Foundation also recognized Michael A. Maroney, Jr. as the Individual Honoree this year. Michael, a proud alumnus of MCC, received the Alumnus of the Year Award from the MCC Alumni Association last year. He is a past chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and Directors and is a current Trustee. He is also past chair and member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Michael received the prestigious Paige D. L’Hommedieu Outstanding Citizenship Award at MCC in honor of his unselfish and humanitarian service to Middlesex County College and his community. In his daily life, Mike is Executive Vice President for Operations of Universal Mailing Service, Inc. in Piscataway.
For the first time ever, the Foundation initiated a tribute to a member of the Middlesex County College campus community through the Campus Booster Award. This Award was established in 2009 by the Foundation to recognize a member of the MCC campus community whose outstanding philanthropic support and advocacy on behalf of the Foundation and its mission has been truly inspirational. Professor John Gutowski was chosen by acclamation to be the first recipient of the Campus Booster Award. For the past 40 years, John has been a professor of history and social science at Middlesex County College, and for 20 of those years, he chaired the division now known as the Department of History and Social Science. His dedication to Middlesex County College Foundation’s mission has been outstanding. This recognition was made to John for being an outstanding advocate, leader, and a generous donor on behalf of MCC students and the Foundation.
Thanks to the many board members, individual and corporate friends, alumni, and members of the MCC campus community for generously supporting the 40th anniversary of our Annual Scholarship Ball!
