If you are placed in any of the developmental math classes (MAT 010 or MAT 013 or MAT 014), you are permitted to challenge that placement. Please talk with an academic advisor to determine if the challenge is a proper option for you. Please remember that this challenge must take place prior to the first day of class. There will be no challenges to the Math placement in your class during the first week of class. The Challenge Test is available in the Testing Center in JLC 229.

When you meet with an academic advisor, you may learn that your test scores have placed you in a combination math class. You may be placed in a class that combines Basic Math and Algebra I (MAT 009 and MAT 013 co-enrollment) or a class that combines Basic Math and Algebra I Part A (MAT 009 and MAT 013A co-enrollment.

The advisor may recommend or you may choose to enroll in the two semester sequence (A and B) of these classes. This will enable you to complete this course over 28 weeks instead of one semester.

The following table outlines the College Placement Test or SAT scores for the placement in the various Math classes.

If a student has taken the SAT, the following table will indicate the corresponding Math course appropriate to the SAT Math score:

SAT Math Score	Math Placement
500 & higher	Exempt from Accuplacer Testing Eligible for MAT 101, 104, 107, 123, and BUS 115
Precalculus and Calculus Placement
500 – 549 and the student wants Precalculus	Precalculus placement based upon general math diagnostic test (may place into MAT 014, MAT 129A or MAT 129). Please look at the next table for the "cut scores" in the Precalculus Diagnostic Test.
550 or higher And student wants Precalculus	Exempt from MAT 014 Eligible for MAT 129A or 129 (student’s choice)
550 - 649	Eligible to register for MAT 131 or MAT 131A if NCWS screen demonstrates a “C” or better in high school precalculus. We must have the final grade. A student without high school precalculus must take the precalculus test
650 and higher	Student may choose MAT 129A, 129, 131 or 131A

For Math, if a student's score places the student into MAT 010, 013 or 014, a challenge test is permitted for all score results. The following table provides the "cut scores" for the different Math challenges and the Precalculus Diagnostic Test.

MAT 010	0-19 (remains in MAT 010) 20-30 (passes out of MAT 010)
MAT 013	0-17 (remains in MAT 013) 18-25 (passes out of MAT 013)
MAT 014	0-17 (remains in MAT 014) 18-25 (passes out of MAT 014)
Precalculus	0-14 (must register for MAT 090/129A) 15-19 (MAT 129A) 20-29 (MAT 129) 30-32 (MAT 131)

All Math challenges must be completed before the start of the second week of class meetings. Review materials are available to help them prepare for the math challenge tests. Students can pick up math review materials in the Testing Center (JLC 229).
