 Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs

1)   Where is wireless access to the Internet available at MCC’s Edison campus?

a)    Library, Crabiel Hall, College Center,PAC, Edison Hall, Main Hall, L'Hommedieu Hall (coming soon).

b)   Future locations will be announced as they become available.

 

2)   Who can use the MCC’s Wireless Network?

a)    Currently any registered student, MCC Staff and Faculty, as well as invited guests (see Item 3 below).

 

3)   What user name and password do I need to use to logon to the MCC Wireless Network?

a)    Currently enrolled students should connect to the SSID mccwireless and should refer to the directions at http://www.middlesexcc.edu/wireless/ to find out how to configure their laptop to connect.

b)   MCC Staff and Faculty should connect to the SSID mccstaff. Faculty and staff refer to the directions http://www.middlesexcc.edu/wireless/ to find out how to obtain their credentials and configure their laptop to connect

c) Invited Guests will be provided access to the SSID mccguest on an as needed basis. The username and password is available from the Student Activities office in College Center or from your host here on MCC. Please refer to the directions http://www.middlesexcc.edu/wireless/ to find out how to configure their laptop to connect.

 

4)   What do I do if I forget my login information?

a)    Student Login and passwords can be viewed by selecting "WIRELESS ID AND PASSWORD" from within CampusCruiser/WebAdvisor. If you do not know your login and password to CampusCruiser, you'll need to go to the Registrar's office with a picture ID to have your password reset.

b) MCC Staff and Faculty will need to stop by the Department of Information Technology Help Desk in Center 3 from 8am-4pm M-F with a picture ID to have their password reset.

 

5)   What types of wireless devices can connect to the network?

a)    Laptop/Notebook computers and mobile devices capable of being configured for secure wireless access.  In order to securely connect to the MCC Wireless Network, these devices must support WPA2-Enterprise encryption and MSCHAP-V2 authentication protocols. Check your individual device manuals for this information. Please note that Windows XP requires SP3 or SP2 with Microsoft Update for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 as a minimum

 

6)   How do I know if my device is wireless capable?

a)    Please refer to the manufacturer of your laptop/notebook computer or mobile device to see if it is wireless capable.

b)   Due to the large number and variety of wireless devices available, it is impossible to determine exactly what devices will and will not connect to the MCC Wireless Network.

 

7)   How do I connect my wireless device to the MCC Wireless Network?

a)    It is up to the individual to configure their wireless device for access. The Department of Information Technology has provided configuration guides for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Macintosh OSX operating systems. The configuration information can be found at:  http://www.middlesexcc.edu/wireless/

Configuration of other operating systems or devices are strictly up to the individual attempting to connect to the wireless network.

 

8)   What is the Network name for connection purposes?

a)    Please refer to the installation guides referenced above for the Network Name (SSID) you will use for access to the MCC Wireless Network.

 

9)   Will this connection be a secure access?

a)    With the exception of the guest network, all connections are encrypted.

 

10)          Do I need to use any specific internet browser when connected to the MCC Wireless Network?

a)    No, any graphical based browser such as Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox will work.

 

11)          Do I need to disable security on my wireless device?

a)    Please refer to your device manufacturer and installed software for guidance on configuring your wireless device.

 

12)          Do I need to disable anti-virus on my wireless device?

a)    While regular anti-virus software should not interfere with setting up your wireless connection, many security packages that are included with anti-virus software may include firewall programs that can prevent you from utilizing the MCC Wireless Network.  Please refer to the software vendor who provided the security package for guidance on configuring the various aspects of their software for use with wireless networks.

 

13)          Are there special instructions to connect using Windows Vista or Windows 7?

a)    Please refer to the Installation Guide for Vista and Windows 7 for configuring your wireless card (see No. 7).

b)   Two methods have been provided for configuring a Windows Vista and Windows 7 devices: Manual; or downloading and running a script that will automatically configure your device for you.

 

14)          Are there special instructions to connect using a MAC?

a)    Please refer to the Installation Guide for Apple OSX for configuring your wireless card (see Item No. 7).

 

15)          Are there restrictions to what I can access using my wireless device?

16)          Can I use Instant Messenger Services?

17)          Are there time limitations when using the wireless network?

a)    The MCC Wireless Network is available for use when the buildings with wireless access are open. 

 

18)          What can I do if I am having trouble accessing the wireless network?

a)    Assuming others are successfully connected to the wireless network;

i)      Check that you have followed all the instructions on the MCC wireless configuration guides. These guides must be followed exactly to successfully connect to the MCC wireless network.

ii)   Individuals are required to know and understand their own device configuration requirements for connecting to a wireless network.  Check your wireless devices’ documentation and software configurations.

iii)            Seek advice from other students who are successfully connected to the network.

b)   Assuming no one else is able to connect to the wireless network, ask a Student Activities staff member located in College Center room 213 to verify the MCC Wireless Network is operational.

 

19) I am a staff member and I want to print to the printer in my office. How can I configure my laptop to do this?

a) The wireless access provided for MCC Staff and Faculty use is for general internet access. No access is provided to resources located within offices or classrooms.
