The Educational Philosophy of the Child Care Center
Our educational philosophy is child-centered. Early childhood years are the most formative time in human development. The foundation for self-esteem is laid, and children learn to adapt successfully to the world. We encourage the development of critical thinking skills, creativity, imagination, and self-expression.
Our teachers seek to create an environment for learning. During a typical day, each child spends time in individual and group activities, alternating quiet and active times. There are many kinds of learning:
• Creative expression: art, carpentry, painting, music, and movement
• Social relationships: small and large group activities, and dramatic play
• Communication skills, puppetry, storytelling, and sharing
• Reading readiness: matching sorting, letter recognition, sequencing, writing, and language experience
• Math readiness and conceptual skills: cooking, sorting and sequencing activities, and number games
• Environmental/science awareness: nature walks, pets, and plants
• Motor skills: movement, climbing, rhythm, and dancing
• Field trips and classroom visitors to provide enriching experiences
The Center’s Program
The Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on a year-round basis. Breakfast, lunch, a rest period, and an afternoon snack are provided at no additional cost.
Professional preschool education and child care facilities are available at the Center for children of full-time students and staff of Middlesex County College and full-time working parents of the community at large.
Children between 2.5 and 5 years of age who are able to function in a school situation are eligible to apply for admission. Admission is determined based on a child’s age, need, and the number of children the Center can accommodate.
In certain circumstances, family size and income can be taken into consideration if a family in need cannot afford the program tuition. Child care costs may be subsidized through a grant from the New Jersey Division of Family Development. This program is available on a limited basis and is based on gross annual income and family size.
The creation of four separate classrooms with members of a teaching team working on a staggered daily schedule has permitted us to provide the consistency of care that is essential for young children.
Your child’s teaching team will consist of a qualified teacher with additional assistants who will get to know your child and plan for his/her daily interests and needs. It is essential for the success of your child’s child care experience that you get to know your child’s teachers. Letting them know about your child’s interests, fears, and activities away from the Center will help them to help your child.
Children’s work is not differentiated from play. Variety and novelty are essential elements in arousing curiosity. Daily activities include cooking, dramatic play, dance, creative art experiences, manipulation and classification of materials, large and small muscle exercise, and verbal interaction to develop language.
We plan daily activities to provide both a regular routine and a wide variety of learning experiences for every child. Regular attendance and parent participation are essential components of the Center’s operation.
Parents are encouraged to participate in the Child Care Center program. Participation may be in any or all of the following areas:
1. Attendance at parent meetings (dates are posted on the bulletin boards)
2. Classroom volunteerism
3. Trip chaperones
4. Parents’ clean-up committee
5. Parents fundraising activities
6. Book and toy repair
7. “My Special Day”: Each parent needs to set aside one day during the year to spend with his or her child.
There will be two scheduled progress reports per year. Parent-teacher conferences may be arranged at the request of any of the following:
• the teacher,
• the parent(s),
• and/or the director
